Pickens Wild Horse Sanctuary Saves Taxpayers $700-$800 Million

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

Under current stewardship by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the costs for maintaining and confining the more than 30,000 wild horses and burros will cost American taxpayers approximately $1 billion dollars over the next decade.

In contract, the Saving America’s Mustangs Foundation’s wild horse sanctuary plan will save taxpayers approximately $700 to $800 million dollars over the decade.

This is possible because the Foundation costs are much lower than the government program. The Foundation plan entails an annual stipend of $500 per horse for the life of the horse to care for the horses, manage the ranch, the farm, repair the fences, install new irrigation and rebuild homes for staff. Still, even with superior animal care and facilities, the Foundation saves American taxpayers approximately $700 million. That represents a tremendous savings to the government and a superior solution for preserving America’s wild horses and mustangs.

Congress Considering Bill to Ban Wild Horse & Burro Slaughter

Monday, April 6th, 2009

Democratic Representatives Nick Rahall of West Virginia and Raul Grijalva of Arizona have introduced a bill that would ban the killing of healthy horses and burros that roam public lands, as well as set aside more land for the animals.

Currently there about 33,000 wild horses and burros that roam in 10 Western states.  These animals are managed by the Bureau of Land Management under the legal protection of The Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971 (Public Law 92-195) which states:

“It is the policy of Congress that wild free-roaming horses and burros shall be protected from capture, branding, harassment, or death; and to accomplish this they are to be considered in the area where presently found, as an integral part of the natural system of the public lands.”

(To see entire Act click here - http://www.wildhorseandburro.blm.gov/92-195.htm)

However, today these wild horses and burros are being rounded-up by the BLM and held snout-to-butt in long-term holding pens (for 3 years now) and also are at risk of being slaughtered.

The BLM claims fiscal constraints require them to round-up and confine these horses even though these practices are against the The Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971 and the long-term confinement costs American tax payers hundreds of millions dollars more. In addition, the BLM says it is considering euthanasia as a way to stem escalating costs of keeping animals gathered from the open range, but ‘euthanasia’ is shooting these animals in the head, which raises issues of government waste and inhumane treatment of animals.

The bill to ban wild horse and burro slaughter would help prevent this situation. In addition, Madeleine Pickens’ Wild Horse Sanctuary would provide safe, protected and free-roaming land for America’s wild horses.

Madeleine is working tirelessly in Washington DC to galvanize support for her plan – and she is succeeding – but hearing from the American public helps even more to convince the BLM to take action. This requires a concerted effort. Please contact Interior  Secretary Salazar and the BLM using the link below. Let them know that you want to protect and save America’s wild horses.

Washington Update & Wild Horse Sanctuary Plan Details

Friday, March 27th, 2009

Dear Friends,

I’ve just returned from Washington DC where we met with senators and their staff to present our Wild Horse Sanctuary business plan. We feel that it was well received and look forward to further cooperation with elected officials and the BLM. At this time, we are eagerly anticipating the appointment of the new head of the BLM. While this transition is in progress, we continue to build momentum in Washington DC to support the Sanctuary (which will save American taxpayers millions), and rescue the thousands of wild horses that are held in captivity and at risk of slaughter.

Now more than ever, we need to put public pressure on the BLM for the sake of these wild horses and burros. The thousands of emails and letters you’ve sent have made a tremendous impact. We’re still on target to reach 5,000! If you have not yet contacted Salazar and the BLM, please click here to send them a message in support of the Wild Horse Sanctuary. Again, please forward this email to as many people and groups as possible.

In addition, we have recently posted on www.MadeleinePickens.com updates on the Wild Horse Sanctuary Plan. This provides more details on the Plan as well as addresses many of the questions and suggestions you’ve submitted. Please click here to read more.

As always, thank you for your support and passionate concern for America’s wild horses and burros. All of our efforts are making a difference to save the lives of these extraordinary animals.

With gratitude,
Madeleine Pickens
